UNAMID Supports Rehabilitation of El Hamra School in Kutum, North Darfur

On 23 July 2015, the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) officially handed over a fully constructed 240-meter boundary wall around Elhamra Basic School for girls in Kutum, North Darfur, to the school administration in the presence of Kutum Locality Education Manager, Mr Issa Abdallah, King of Kutum, Mr Fathi Mohammed, community leaders, teachers and UNAMID Staff.

The construction of the boundary wall around the school was part of the Mission’s Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) implemented by UNAMID’s Civilian-Military Coordination (CIMIC) Office, with the support of the Civil Affairs Section Sector North. The project was implemented upon request from the local community to UNAMID’s South African Battalion base in Kutum to improve the safety of the students in the school.

In his remarks, the UNAMID`s South African Battalion Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Tello Joseph, noted the importance of building the fence around EL Hamra Basic School as it will help the school girls learn in a safe and conducive environment.
The Kutum Locality Education Manager thanked UNAMID for the support to El Hamra Basic School and requested the Mission to implement more projects to improve the education environment in the locality.

The school principal, Mrs Hawa Abdallah, expressed her appreciation to UNAMID for its contribution to the improvement of education conditions in the area. “The school urgently needed a fence because it is located on the main road from El Fasher to Kutum. With the newly built fence, our students can now be safe while studying here,” she said.
