UNAMID Hands over Developmental Projects to Community in Shagra North Darfur

On 29 July 2015, UNAMID’s Protection of Civilian and Humanitarian Liaison Section handed over two Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) consisted of two new classrooms, an office and latrines to the Shagra Secondary School for Girls, and the installation of a water supply connection to the areas of Shagra Hilat Abu Baker and Shagra Hilat Musa, located approximately 15 kilometres west of El Fasher, North Darfur.

The two projects were conducted in collaboration with the implementing partner Shagra Women Development Charity Society.

More than 1000 students, community members and internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in Shagra community attended the event, in addition to government officials, UNAMID representatives and local non-governmental organizations representatives.

The acting Wali of North Darfur state, Mr Mohamed Ismail, expressed his appreciation for UNAMID’s efforts in implementing needed developmental projects in the local communities. He also commended the good coordination between the Government and the Mission in terms of protection of civilians and supporting the peace process. “We praise UNAMID’s efforts in supporting peace, stability and development across the Darfur region,” said Ismail.

Mr Mohamed Ismail stated that the two projects will strongly contribute to peace and stability in the area. He explained that people in Shagra will have easier access to water, and a more conducive learning environment for the students and teachers.

In his remarks, the UNAMID representative, Mr John Omondi, expressed UNAMID’s commitment towards its mandate that included the protection of civilians, support for the peace process and the facilitation of humanitarian assistance to Darfuris who are in most need. “Besides its core mandate, UNAMID also carries out developmental projects that contribute to enhancing peaceful coexistence among communities,” Mr Omomdi added.
