UNAMID responds to new tribal clashes in Shangil Tobaiya

27 October 2009 -- On 26 October, at approximately 15:00 hours, UNAMID Team Site at Shangil Tobaiya (70km south of El Fasher, North Darfur) received information that tribal clashes between the Zaghawas and Birgids resumed leaving 10 Birgids killed, two of whom died at UNAMID Level I Hospital (LIH) in Shangil Tobaiya. Twelve Birgids were also injured and taken to UNAMID LIH. Seven of the twelve were later taken to MSF clinic who evacuated six of them by road to El Fasher and kept the seventh in its Shangil Tobaiya clinic. The other five injured were evacuated by UNAMID helicopter to El Fasher.

UNAMID is sending by air a joint assessment mission to the area tomorrow, 28 October. The assessment mission will include representatives of UN Security, Humanitarian Liaison, Human Rights, Civil Affairs and the UN Country Team Protection Cluster, in close coordination with UNAMID Military and Police.

Two persons had died in communal clashes on 20 October between the Zaghawa and Birgid tribes in the area between Jabel Moskul and Jabelti area, about 20 kilometres southeast of Shangil Tobaya, North Darfur.
