UNAMID intervenes in tribal clashes in Shangil Tobaya; provides medical aid to wounded

22 October 2009 -- Two persons died after sustaining injuries in communal clashes on 20 October between the Zaghawa and Birgid tribes in an area between Jabel Moskul and Jabelti area, about 20 kilometres southeast of Shangil Tobaya, North Darfur.

UNAMID Peacekeepers in Shangil Tobaya intervened and succeeded in bringing the situation under control. Six people from both sides sustained injuries during the fighting, four critically. UNAMID evacuated the latter by helicopter to El Fasher for further treatment at GoS Civil Hospital, while admitting the two others in UNAMID Level I Hospital in Shangil Tobaya for treatment.

The immediate cause of the clash was attributed to fighting over access to water sources. As a temporary solution, UNAMID has made arrangements to supply water to the communities.
