6 Feb 11 - Dialogue in West Darfur to promote tribal coexistence

06 February 2011 - In an effort to help ease tribal tensions in West Darfur, UNAMID concluded on 4 February two field missions to Terej, 32 km south of Zalingei, to meet with leaders in nearby villages.

Ethnic tensions between the Fur and Misserriya tribes have increased after large numbers of the latter were forced to relocate following clashes in December 2010. UNAMID peacekeepers met with elders from both groups and assessed living conditions and the availability of basic services. In the coming days, the Mission will assist both tribes to take an active part in local committees to promote dialogue and strategies for peaceful coexistence.
