03 Feb 11 - Water pump in Shangil Tobaya provides relief for thousands

03 February 2011 - UNICEF, together with UNAMID, has yesterday completed the installation of a high-capacity water pump near the Mission’s team site in Shangil Tobaya, North Darfur.

The pump will serve the thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have settled outside UNAMID’s team site following fighting in the area in December 2010. Prior to this, the IDPs had been relying on water supplied by UNAMID troops and security escorts to distant water sources.

A second pump is planned to be installed within the next few days. The Mission also continues to offer protection to the displaced persons, as well as logistical support and security escorts for humanitarian operations in the region.
