27 Feb 11 - Security situation update

27 February 2011 - UNAMID patrols to villages in North and South Darfur reported over the weekend that large numbers of villagers continue to move to internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in light of ongoing clashes between forces of the Government of the Sudan (GoS) and armed groups, clashes apparently resulting from ambushes by rebel movements against GoS troops. Aid agencies are currently estimating the numbers of newly displaced persons in some of the largest camps to begin distribution of humanitarian supplies.

The peacekeepers also discovered a number of UXOs (unexploded ordnance) which had been dropped during aerial bombardment on 24 February outside Kushiny village, near Tawilla in North Darfur. The explosives were marked. A UNAMID Explosive and Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team will be dispatched to the area shortly.
