28 Feb 11 - Inter-agency field mission to a nomadic community in Kabkabiya, North Darfur

28 February 2011 - UNAMID and a number of UN agencies yesterday met local community leaders in Seeh Gannah, located 17 km north of Kabkabiya, North Darfur, to discuss issues relevant to their security and well-being.

The local leaders requested logistical support to facilitate their return to their original villages in North Kutum from which they were reportedly displaced. They also complained of a lack of adequate educational facilities, especially schools, and a shortage of water, among other basic amenities.

UNAMID and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) used the opportunity to hand over tents for classrooms and a maternity training centre as well as school supplies.

The team later held a meeting with the Commissioner of Kabkabiya, members of the locality security coordination committee, internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the area and civil society representatives.
