The event began with a march of solidarity through town. More than 1,000 took part, including those from local communities and internally displaced people camps, representatives from state government institutions, civil society, medical institutions, school children, and Sudanese police and military, together with UN agencies and UNAMID staff. At the town’s El Negaa Stadium a variety of cultural displays and dances were conducted by local traditional groups and UNAMID’s contingents.

UNAMID’s Joint Special Representative (JSR) Ibrahim Gambari, who attended the event, noted that “violence against women is happening in any society or country and that we have to face the issue squarely and truthfully.” He added that it has to be addressed without delay by undertaking any means possible to protect women from all forms of violence.

The JSR also stated that “women are change agents, peacemakers, and valuable partners in our homes, communities, and society. Let us continue to empower them and ourselves to ensure their safety and welfare, and to uphold their human rights.”
