Statement to the Media

Joint Special Representative expresses concern
at attack by Sudanese Armed Forces against SLA/Minni Minawi in South Darfur

El Fasher, 11 November 2010 – African Union - United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) Joint Special Representative Ibrahim Gambari expresses his deep concern at the attack on the village of Khor Abeche, South Darfur, located 80km northeast of Nyala.

  

The incident took place at approximately 10:30hrs on 10 December, reportedly by Sudanese Armed Forces against Sudan Liberation Army / Minni Minawi elements.

According to initial reports, as many as 500 civilians fled to UNAMID’s nearby camp for protection. However, the number has now been revised to between 200 to 250 individuals.

UNAMID is investigating the incident and continues to provide security for civilians in the area.

The Joint Special Representative calls on all parties to refrain from hostilities and respect their obligations under international humanitarian law to safe guard innocent civilians.
