08 Sep 11 - Ceasefire Commission to meet on a regular basis

8 September 2011 - The second meeting of the Ceasefire Commission (CFC) was held today in El Fasher, North Darfur, chaired by UNAMID’s Force Commander, Lieutenant General Patrick Nyamvumba, and included senior representatives of the Government of the Sudan and the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM). The participants decided to meet on a regular basis every two weeks in order to push ahead its task. The meeting took place in a friendly and cordial atmosphere and there was a willingness from all parties to pursue the goal of the Commission.

The CFC under UNAMID was established to implement the provisions of various peace deals signed by parties to the conflict in Darfur, dating back to the N’Djamena Humanitarian Ceasefire accord of 2008. It has now been strengthened by the signing of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) between the Sudanese Government and LJM on 14 July 2011.

The Commission’s functions are critical to the implementation of the provisions of the DDPD, and ultimately the permanent ceasefire and final security arrangements. These functions include monitoring all violations against the DDPD as well as older accords, monitoring of dialogue among parties that have signed the agreement and ensuring the safety of those implementing these accords.
