13 Sept 11 - UNAMID continues to support local police in Darfur

13 September 2011 - The African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) today presented 25 vehicles to the local police anti-car-theft unit. The presentation was attended by UNAMID Joint Special Representative (JSR) Professor Ibrahim Gambari, Force Commander, Lt. Gen Patrick Nyamvumba, Police Commissioner James Oppong-Boanuh, senior UNAMID police officers and other senior officials as well as representatives of the Government of the Sudan Police and senior regional authorities.

JSR Gambari in his remarks emphasized that the event was a significant occasion for all who strive to advance peace, security and prosperity in Darfur.

“Today we celebrate the close partnership between UNAMID and the Sudanese Police force in ensuring that the policemen and policewomen in Darfur are appropriately equipped and well trained to advance security and stability and to promote the rule of law”, said Professor Gambari.

In his remarks, the UNAMID Police Commissioner said this presentation was a demonstration of UNAMID efforts to enhance the capacity for the local police in its fight against crime including carjacking.

The Commissioner also emphasized that the Mission mandate was to contribute towards a stable and secure environment in Darfur. He said the Mission and the GoS police have made a positive impact in ensuring safety and security with particular emphasis on the Joint Security Operation Centre.

The presentation of the vehicles by UNAMID will assist the local police anti-car-theft unit established in 2009 to swiftly
respond to carjacking incidences. The vehicles will assist the unit cut down their reaction time and to apprehend and deter those engaging in carjacking and other crimes.

The GOS police Director- General for North Darfur State Maj Gen Omar Elamin Mohammed said the presentation was a practical demonstration of the cooperation between the Sudanese Police and UNAMID in providing safety and security in Darfur.
