06 Sep 11 - UXO accidents in North and South Darfur

6 September 2011 - Two children were killed and three others sustained serious injuries in Al Tawisha, approximately 190 km south east of El Fasher, North Darfur, while playing with unexploded ordinance (UXO) on 31 August. The injured children -one of them has lost a hand and an eye- were admitted to El Fasher hospital for treatment.

The local NGO Friend of Peace and Development Organization and UNAMID Ordinance Disposal Office are planning to carry out an assessment of the area and conduct risk education for the local community this week.

In a separate incident, near Amdawenpan village in Abu Abajura locality, South Darfur, a 14 years girl was injured by a UXO few weeks ago with wounds to neck and face, while her right hand had to be amputated.

UNAMID Explosive Disposal Ordinance team also visited yesterday Sehjanna village, located 25km north west from Kutum, North Darfur, to educate the inhabitants and clear the village of any UXO.
