01 Sep 11 - Hundreds of civilians affected by floods in North Darfur

More than 600 households have been affected by floods, including 7 schools which were partially destroyed and most of the latrines have been completely washed away in a North Darfur town.

UNAMID participated in an interagency assessment mission to Dar al Salaam, located about 60 kilometers south of El Fasher town in North Darfur on 29 August to assess and identify emergency needs of the affected population. The team interacted with the locality commissioner, representatives of local community and displaced persons and visited some of the affected areas as well as the Wadi of Umm Tahana, the source of flood in the area.

About 250 households received shelters and other non-food items from WFP and partners however more humanitarian
assistance is required for the affected population.

The community complained of lack of potable water, access to health services and shelter and non-food items.
UN Agencies and UNAMID are discussing ways to address the water shortage in the area.
