04 Jan 11 - Preparations in Darfur finalize for South Sudan referendum

04 January 2011 - With the referendum on South Sudan less than a week away, the South Sudan Referendum Commission, in cooperation with UNAMID and UNMIS, is concluding a series of training seminars for staff at the 20 polling centers in the three Darfur states.

Staff members reviewed the details of all the stages of the polling process, as well as potential obstacles. UNAMID police peacekeepers also offered advice on issues relating to polling centre security and the movement of ballots.

There are an estimated 23,000 people registered to vote on the referendum in the Darfur states. During the referendum, UNAMID will work to ensure the swift transportation of polling materials and the peaceful completion of the voting process.
