03 January 2011 - The security situation is reported to be calm in areas in North and South Darfur that have seen mass displacement in the past weeks following clashes between government troops and rebel movements.

UNAMID Force Commander Lt Gen Patrick Nyamvumba yesterday made a field assessment visit to Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDP) camps and the Mission team sites in Khor Abeche in South Darfur and Shangil Tobaya in North Darfur. He met with peacekeepers, aid workers and IDP representatives and was briefed on the current security and humanitarian situations. The Force Commander also expressed the Mission’s gratitude for their work in protecting and supporting the recently displaced persons.

Meanwhile, the distribution of food and other non-food items continues in team sites were IDPs have sought refuge from the clashes. UNAMID peacekeepers continue to provide protection and emergency health care to IDPs, including conducting night patrols and escorts to nearby water points.
