UNAMID to mark 60th anniversary of United Nations peacekeeping

28 May 2008 --The United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur, UNAMID will on Thursday 29 May 2008, commemorate the 60th anniversary of UN Peacekeeping Day to honor the brave men and women who continue to serve in UN peacekeeping missions throughout the world as well as remember those that lost their lives in the quest for peace.

It is to be recalled that the United Nations officially designated 29 May as the UN peacekeeping day. On this day in 1948, the first UN peacekeeping mission, the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), began operations with a group of unarmed military observers in Palestine.

UNAMID will observe this year’s International Day of UN Peacekeepers in El Fasher, as well as the Sector Headquarters of Nyala and El Geneina.

The highlight of the event will be the unveiling, in El Fasher, of the memorial plaque in honor of the 61 peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving with the African Union Mission in the Sudan (AMIS) during the period (2004-2007).

Invitations have been extended to representatives of troops contributing countries, international partners, Sudan government officials as well as the local and international media.
