UNAMID begins disseminating Doha agreement to communities in South Darfur

07 March 2010 - This month, UNAMID’s Civil Affairs component in Nyala, South Darfur, has embarked on a series of working visits to some of the region’s most remote areas to raise awareness about the recently-signed Doha  agreement between the Government of Sudan and Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) in Doha.

The teams visited several towns and villages, were they briefed the local communities on key points of the agreement and distributed copies of the document. The community representatives expressed appreciation for the Mission’s support, while stressing that the issue of insecurity remains one of the major challenges in the area.

These missions also provide UNAMID with an opportunity to gain a clearer picture of the various requirements of these populations in terms of healthcare, education, water and sanitation. The information gathered will help the Civil Affairs section to plan a number of Quick Impact Projects which will help to improve their conditions.
