New Community Policing Centre near El Fasher to begin 24-hour operations

22 February 2009 -- UNAMID Police will tonight conduct its first night patrols at a new community policing centre (CPC) constructed between two large camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) near El Fasher.

With the commencement of the night patrols, the interim CPC will move to continuous 24-hour operations as part of UNAMID’s efforts to enhance its protection of the tens of thousands of residents of the Abu Shouk and El Salaam camps for IDPs.

The CPC was erected by UNAMID police advisers, members of the Mission’s Egyptian engineering contingent and Mission support staff. Construction will start within the next two weeks on another interim CPC – this time near Zamzam, a separate IDP camp close to El Fasher.
