28 Dec 10 - Update on security situation

28 December 2010 - With restrictions lifted on all air and road movement to areas of recent fighting in North and South Darfur, UNAMID and aid agencies are providing food, water, and other necessary supplies to the thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) sheltered outside the Mission’s team sites.

UNAMID today escorted an eight-truck humanitarian convoy to Khor Abeche, in South Darfur, where 19 tons of food was delivered by air yesterday to over 10,000 IDPs around the Mission’s team site.

A convoy carrying fuel and food to the estimated 5,000 new IDPs in Shangil Tobaya, North Darfur departed from El Fasher this morning.

Similar missions to Shaeria, Jaghara and Negaha by UNAMID and humanitarian actors are planned for the coming days. UNAMID and aid agencies have today begun a series of assessment missions to these locations to coordinate the distribution of relief items.

The security situation today is reported to be calm. UNAMID continues to monitor developments.
