UNAMID statement on reports of renewed fighting in Darfur

El Fasher, 25 December 2010 – The Joint Special Representative of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operations in Darfur (UNAMID) expresses his deep concern over reports of continued fighting on the ground, particularly in Dar al-Salam and Khor Abeche, and rising tensions in Shangil Tobaya and other areas. The Joint Special Representative insists that the parties immediately desist from fighting and provide their full cooperation to the Joint Chief Mediator in agreeing to an immediate cessation of hostilities. He calls on any party that may be providing support to the movements to immediately desist from doing so.

UNAMID has received disturbing reports of civilian deaths, continued displacement, and looting and destruction of civilian property during the recent fighting in Khor Abeche and Dar Al Salam.  UNAMID is working closely with the humanitarian community in ensuring protection for civilians caught in the hostilities and in assisting those who have gathered at its Team Sites.  The Joint Special Representative calls on the Government and the movements to provide their full cooperation to UNAMID and the humanitarian community, including full and unrestricted access to all affected areas, in particular Shangil Tobaya, Dar Al Salam, Khor Abeche, Shaeria, Muhajeria, Marla and Labado, as they provide assistance to civilians in need, in accordance with their respective mandates
