UN Day celebrations in Darfur

El Fasher, 24 October 2010 – The African Union - United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) today joined worldwide celebrations for UN Day, commemorating the establishment of the Charter of the United Nations in 1947.

The event was celebrated in all three Darfur states, under the theme “Together for Peace in Darfur.” In Al Zubeir stadium in El Fasher, the Mission’s senior leadership was joined by State representatives and members of UN Country Team entities operating in the region as well as hundreds of residents for an exhibition showcasing the UN’s contributions to the region’s security and development.

This was followed by a series of cultural performances featuring schoolchildren, traditional dance troupes and a number of UNAMID contingents. It was broadcast live throughout Darfur.

Similar activities were held in UNAMID offices in West and South Darfur. In Zalingei, West Darfur, a football match between UNAMID peacekeepers and a team from the Hamidiya Internally Displaced Persons camp was attended by over five thousand people.
