24 January 2011 - UNAMID Joint Chief Representative (JSR) Ibrahim Gambari today visited El Geneina and Forobaranga in West Darfur, the latter located 10 kilometers from the border with Chad, where he met with peacekeepers, as well as Government officials.
JSR Gambari, along with UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator Georg Charpentier, met with the Wali (Governor) of West Darfur and the state’s security committee. They discussed the latest developments in the security and political situation, including progress on UNAMID-funded projects and the Government’s strategy for Darfur and the recent expulsion of aid workers.
In Forobaranga, Professor Gambari was briefed by the Mission’s military and police peacekeepers on their activities. He commended their efforts and stressed the importance of continued robust patrols to ensure the safety of civilians. The JSR also visited the Um al-Mumineen School, which had been rehabilitated by UNAMID peacekeepers as a quick impact project. The delegation is scheduled to travel tomorrow to Zalingei, West Darfur.
