20 June 2010 UNAMID held on 15 June a meeting with the Wali (Governor) of North Darfur, Mr. Osman Kibir, to discuss the situation of six (6) detainees from the Abu Shouk internally displaced persons (IDP) camp. The individuals are part of an initial group of 20 from the community who were arrested in August 2009 in connection with the murder of the camp’s Omda (Mayor) and his wife.  

During the discussions, UNAMID officials used the opportunity to brief the Wali on the ongoing capacity-building programmes and activities of the Mission’s Human Rights section.

The Wali reaffirmed his commitment to take relevant measures to speed up the ongoing criminal investigations for the rapid trial or release of the six (6) detainees. Mr. Kibir also agreed to set up the Darfur Human Rights sub-forum and convene its first meeting by end of June.
