20 Jun 10 - Humane treatment for prisoners focus of event

20 June 2010 - UNAMID, in collaboration with the North Darfur Prison Director, today began a training programme for Sudanese prison staff. The five-day event, sponsored by the SWISS fund, is designed to raise awareness amongst prison management staff on Human Rights practices. The aim is to provide correction officials with the skills and knowledge needed to improve their work, particularly in regards to the humane treatment and care of prisoners, and encourage them to adopt a culture of respect for Human Rights in accordance with international standards. A total of 30 participants, including eight women, drawn from the seven prisons in North Darfur, attended.

The event is one of many being held by UNAMID this month, focusing on raising the importance of Human Rights to the local law enforcement and legal community.
