19 May 2010 update on security situation

UNAMID notes with great concern the abduction of three aid workers yesterday outside Nyala, South Darfur, as the Mission’s peacekeepers have themselves been the target of such unacceptable offences while in Darfur to help restore stability to the region. The Mission is deeply dismayed by the recent increase in these intolerable crimes and calls for the swift and unconditional release of the aid workers.

On 16 May at Tur Kolme village, 45 km southeast of Zalingei, West Darfur, fighting between the Misseriya and Rizeigat Nawaiba tribes reportedly left three dead and 12 injured. An additional nine persons were injured yesterday. UNAMID continues to work with local leaders to bring the two tribes to the negotiating table.
