18 Jan 11 - Restriction of movements in South Darfur

18 January 2011 - A UNAMID team travelling from Khor Abeche (83 km northeast of Nyala, South Darfur) to Menawashei (73 km north of Nyala) was stopped yesterday by Government of Sudan military at Mershing (75 km north of Nyala) from proceeding further. The Mission patrol was told that local authorities had imposed restrictions on movement towards Nyala. No reasons were given.

A UNAMID convoy escort to Manga (90 km north of Nyala) could not take place due to the same restrictions. However, after the Mission’s intervention, the restrictions were lifted and the convoys allowed to proceed today.
