16 Sep 11 - UNAMID JSR briefs media in Nairobi

16 September 2011 - UNAMID Joint Special Representation (JSR) and Joint Chief Mediator a.i Ibrahim Gambari has briefed members of the Kenyan media in Nairobi on latest developments in the Darfur peace process following the signing of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD).

JSR Gambari was in Nairobi for meetings with UN agencies including the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), two of the agencies whose partnership is important for the early recovery and development programs in Darfur.

In two separate television and newspaper interviews with Kenya’s two leading media groups, JSR Gambari outlined the vision of UNAMID, working with the UN Country Team in Sudan, to build on the DDPD to achieve enduring peace in Darfur and ensure that thousands of Darfuris displaced by conflict return to their homes.

In the interviews with Nation TV and the Standard newspaper, JSR Gambari emphasized the need for the international community to exert pressure on the armed movements in Darfur who have not joined in the peace process to do so.

He said UNAMID was pursuing partnerships with regional organizations, notably the League of Arab States, the African Development Bank and the Islamic Development Bank, working with the government of Sudan, to support projects that will accelerate the early recovery and development of Darfur. Such projects were critically important to underpin any comprehensive peace agreement, he added.

The interview with Nation TV was broadcast on the network’s prime TV news on Thursday night, with a full version aired on its breakfast show on Friday.
