15 Mar 11 - US Ambassador concludes Darfur visit

15 March 2011 - United States Ambassador Dane Smith today concluded a five-day visit to Darfur, facilitated by UNAMID, where he met with local authorities, native administration leaders, civil society organizations, representatives from UN agencies and the Mission leadership.

The visit included trips to the three state capitals, in addition to Tawilla and Kabkabiya in North Darfur, El Daein in South Darfur, and Zalingei in West Darfur. Ambassador Smith was briefed on the overall security situation and humanitarian efforts to reach those displaced by recent fighting.

In Zalingei, the Ambassador visited Orukome village, a community of voluntary returnees with a population of more than 2,200 people. During a meeting in the UNAMID El Daein team site with native administration leaders, he was briefed on reconciliation efforts between local tribes.
