10 Sep 14 - UNAMID Joint Special Representative holds consultations in Doha

Doha, 10 September 2014 - The AU-UN Joint Special Representative/Joint Chief Mediator for Darfur Mr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas held consultations in Doha, on 9 September, with both His Excellency Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud, the Deputy Prime Minister of the State of Qatar and Minister of State for the Council of Ministers, and President Thabo Mbeki, Chairperson of the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP).


They agreed that the national dialogue initiative of His Excellency President Omer Al-Bashir provides a historic opportunity for bringing peace to Sudan. They also agreed on the urgency of bringing war in Darfur and the Two Areas to an end; as part of the ongoing effort to create a conducive environment for the national dialogue.


In this regard, it was further agreed to support the negotiations on security arrangements in Darfur under the auspices of the AUHIP. The Deputy Prime Minister and the Joint Special Representative/Joint Chief Mediator agreed to provide all necessary support to ensure successful negotiations on the security arrangements and delivery of humanitarian assistance in Darfur; taking into consideration the ongoing implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD).


The Deputy Prime Minister in particular emphasised on the need for the implementation of development projects which could alleviate the suffering of the people in IDP camps and enhance security and stability in Darfur.
