07 Mar 11 - Human Rights expert visits North Darfur

07 March 2011 - The Independent Expert on the situation of Human Rights in the Sudan, Justice Mohamed Chande Othman, arrived today in El Fasher, North Darfur, to assess the progress made by UNAMID and the Government of the Sudan in the defense and protection of Human Rights. 

 

Mr. Othman was welcomed by UNAMID Joint Special Representative (JSR), Ibrahim Gambari, who expressed his commitment to the protection of Human Rights and highlighted that impunity is the main problem that affects them.

 

The Independent Expert was also briefed by Mission senior officials on the security and humanitarian situation in Darfur. He later met with representatives of the Abu Shouk internally displaced persons (IDPs) camp and Human Rights advocates.
