06 Feb 12- UNAMID promotes peace and development though sports and culture

06 February 2012 - Under the theme “Together for Peace and Development in Darfur,” UNAMID supported the Al Taylia Sports Club in celebrating the Club's Golden Jubilee this past weekend in El Fasher, North Darfur.

The events, organised to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the organization, were aimed at engaging various groups of Darfuris, particularly the youth, in positive peace-building activities as well as promoting peace messages.

The celebration included a carnival, a football match, a horse race and an official ceremony held on 04 February where trophies and medals were awarded to winners and participants in the various activities. The Wali (Governor) of North Darfur, Osman Mohamed Yousif Kibir, local authorities and UNAMID officials were in attendance.

The week-long activities concluded with a well attended music concert featuring renowned Sudanese jazz musician, Sharhabeel Ahmed. The concert, held at Al Zubeir stadium, attracted a participative crowd of around five thousand people.
