Tenth Meeting of the AU/UN/Government of the Sudan Tripartite Mechanism

On 3 February 2011, representatives of the Government of the Sudan (GoS), the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN), and the African Union – United Nations Mission in Darfur met in Addis Ababa for the tenth Tripartite Coordination Mechanism meeting on UNAMID.

Background
Since the establishment of the Tripartite Mechanism in July 2008, its summits have provided valuable opportunities to reinforce cooperation between the AU, the UN and the Sudanese Government on their support to UNAMID in its mission to protect the people of Darfur.

Recent outcomes
In the most recent meetings, participants agreed that the Mission would shift its focus from troop deployment to the effective employment of UNAMID’s resources toward the full implementation of its mandate.

At the top of the agenda during the last such meeting, held in New York in September 2010, was how the parties could best help ensure the security of civilians in areas affected by armed confrontations and secure access for humanitarian assistance to those regions, especially Jebel Marra.
