UNAMID trains Rural Court members in North Darfur

On 10 November 2015, as part of its mandated activities across Darfur, UNAMID’s Human Rights Section, in collaboration with the Rule of Law Section, organized a one-day training on human rights and Sudanese law for Malha Rural Court members, North Darfur, The event was attended by more than 40 members from the rural courts, youth and women.

The training, which aimed at educating rural court members and community leaders in the justice system in their respective communities, was attended by the King of the Midob tribe and native administration leaders among as well.

In his opening remarks, Khalil Tukras, Human Right Officer, emphasized on the importance of judges and community leader roles in Darfur. “Rural courts and community leaders are responsible for implementing the human rights standards in Darfur,” said Mr. Tukras. “UNAMID organizes such trainings to promote human rights and ensure that global human rights standards are met,” he added. 

On his part, the King of Midob, Mohamed Elsayah, thanked UNAMID for its support in improving the judicial system and rural courts, particularly in North Darfur. He urged all rural courts members and community leaders to put into practice the knowledge gained. 

Mr. Jamie Mohamed, a participant in the training, also expressed his appreciation for UNAMID for providing such training courses. “We highly appreciate the support of UNAMID but we appeal for more such training workshops in future in order to develop the rural courts system in the area,” he stated.

At the same event, UNAMID’s Gender Advisory Unit also conducted an awareness session on gender issues and the importance of gender equality among the rural communities emphasizing women’s role in maintaining gender balance in daily life.
