UNAMID pushes for an end to tribal conflict in West Darfur

11 May 2010 - At a meeting of the newly-formed tribal Reconciliation Committee in Nyala, South Darfur, on 9 May UNAMID continued its efforts to help mediate a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in West Darfur between the Misseriya and Rizeigat Nawaiba tribes.

Fighting between the two tribes had originally broken out in early March in Khor Ramla, 8km west of Nertiti in West Darfur. An accord was reached when a declaration of cessation of hostilities was signed on 28 March in Zalingei, West Darfur. However, the conflict was reignited on 4 May in the Mukjar region of West Darfur.

It is estimated that since March, the clashes have claimed the lives of 107 people on both sides and have caused many more to flee their homes.

The Reconciliation Committee was formed on 29 April and comprises 17 members of native administrations and local leaders, with whom UNAMID’s Civil Affairs component and the Darfur Peace and Reconciliation Council (DPRC) are working closely to help the two tribes reach a lasting peace agreement.
