UNAMID Police Commissioner visits Central and South Darfur

On 24 September 2016, UNAMID Police Commissioner, Priscilla Makotose, visited Central Darfur, where she met the state police commissioner. During the meeting, Ms. Makotose reiterated the Mission’s continued cooperation with GoS Police to achieve peace and stability in Darfur and explained the Mission’s core mandate of protection of civilians and creating enabling environment for sustainable peace.  She highlighted UNAMID contribution in promoting criminal justice system and Rule of Law, through capacity building program provided to GoS Police on regular basis.

During the visit, Ms. Makotose also participated in the inauguration ceremony of a bakery and livelihood project, sponsored by UNAMID Police Women Network at Al Salam camp for the displaced in Zalingei. The project is part of UNAMID Police Women Network initiatives aimed at improving the wellbeing of the displaced women in the camp as well as in Taiba camp.

UNAMID Head of Office, Central Darfur, Lameck Kawiche, stated that UNAMID will continue to provide the necessary support to the local communities in line with its core mandate. He also highlighted the contribution of the Mission’s Police Women Network to supporting the displaced women and sensitizing the camps residents on child and women rights as well as health and sanitation.

 On his part, the state police commissioner, Major General Imad Al Tayeb Abdullah, commended the cooperation between UNAMID and the national police and pledged to continue providing their support to enable the Mission implement its mandate in Darfur. Mr. Abdullah highlighted the efforts of the Sudanese police in combatting crimes and addressing related security incidents in Central Darfur.

UNAMID Police Commissioner also visited Nyala, South Darfur, from 19 to 21 September, where she met government officials, community leaders at El Salam camp for the displaced and UNAMID Staff. During her three-day visit to South Darfur, Ms. Makotose handed over to the local authorities a police centre at Sakali camp for the displaced. The construction was funded by the Mission’s Tanzanian Police contingent.
