UNAMID Launches Skills Training for Youth in West Darfur

On 28 January 2015, as part of the ongoing Community-based Labour-intensive Projects (CLIPs), UNAMID’s Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) Section launched two vocational skills training projects for youth in West Darfur. The four-month training programme will include sessions on food processing, tailoring and design, handicrafts and leather works as well as auto mechanics, driving, electrical installations, welding and mobile phone and television repairs.

The projects are expected to benefit some 120 youth and are part of the Mission’s efforts to support the ongoing peace process in Darfur.

Addressing the opening session, Mr. Islika Sisay, Team Leader, UNAMID DDR, said that empowering Darfuri youth will contribute positively to the economy, and ensure a smoother transition into a stable, peaceful society.

On his part, Mr. Mohammed Ishaq, Commissioner, Humanitarian Aid Commission, stressed the importance of vocational trainings, adding that they contribute to solving economic problems faced by many Darfuri families. He also requested the Mission to provide more such training sessions.
