UNAMID Join IDPs community to celebrates International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers

On 29 May 2019, UNAMID staff members led by the Deputy Joint Special Representative (DJSR) Anita Kiki Gbeho, joined the world community to mark the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers at Al Salam camp for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Zalingei, Central Darfur, by cleaning the environment and painting of the camp’s health centre.

Along with hundreds of residents of the camp, the staff members, including the Force Commander, Lieutenant General Leonard Ngondi and the Acting Police Commander Khadijah Mashile, observed a minute of silence to remember and honour those who have lost their lives serving under the UN flag.

During the event, the DJSR, Gen. Ngondi and Ms. Mashile in the company of IDPs’ leaders handed over water rollers, cleaning and painting materials to local community in the camp.  Meanwhile, UNAMID’s Communications and Public Information Sections distributed Ramadan items (dates and sugar) to the sick and most vulnerable women of the IDPs’ community.

Ms. Gbeho read the UN Secretary-General’s message on the occasion, stating that: “For millions in conflict-affected situations around the world, peacekeeping is a necessity and a hope. Let us work together to make peacekeeping more effective in protecting people and advancing peace”.

Representative of Sheikh of Sheikhs at the camp (Community Leader), Salah Mahadi, thanked UNAMID for its support to IDPs at the camp, particularly the distribution of water. He requested the Mission to assist in the construction of the internal road, schools, health centers as well as rehabilitation of water facilities in the camp.

Representatives of women and youth commended the continued cooperation between UNAMID and the camp leadership and urged the Mission to support youth activities and vulnerable groups such as widows and orphans.

Medical assist at Al Salam camp Health Centre Fatima Abdallah Adam expressed her appreciation to UNAMID for cleaning and painting the centre and requested the mission to provide the centre with chairs.

Similar event was organized at the Mission’s Temporary Operating Base (TOB) in Golo to mark the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.

29 May is celebrated annually worldwide as International Day of UN Peacekeepers to pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in United Nations peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication, and courage and to honour the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.
