UNAMID Helicopter Crash Landed, All Passengers Are Safe

On the morning of 29 September 2013, a UNAMID helicopter developed a technical fault while on a flight from Zalingei to Nertiti, in Central Darfur, soon after taking off. The pilot turned back to Zalingei helipad and during the emergency landing the aircraft crashed and was badly damaged. All 19 passengers and 4 crew were immediately and safely evacuated off the helicopter. Only three passengers suffered minor injuries and were swiftly taken to UNAMID's Level 1 hospital in Zalingei for treatment.

An investigation is underway to find out the technical cause of the crash. UNAMID is conducting a check on all its rotary assets to ensure their technical safety.
