UNAMID hands over rehabilitated police station and water pumps in South Darfur

NYALA – UNAMID has rehabilitated a police station and four hand-operated water pumps in Beliel locality, South Darfur as part of the Mission’s Quick Impact Projects (QIPs).

At a handover ceremony last week (9 November) to the Marla Administrative Unit (local council), Berhanemeskel Nega, Head of UNAMID’s Sector South Office, said that seeing the projects completed was a very positive occasion.

The QIPs also involved the training of 20 members the local technical committee on the repair and maintenance of the pumps.

Mr. Nega said that it is important to see local leaders and government officials taking the lead in peace and becoming the main players in peace making activities.

He urged everyone to work collaboratively and collectively for peace, reiterating that although the Mission is undergoing reconfiguration, it continues to support peace-building projects in Darfur.

Mohammed El-Nadeeif, who spoke on behalf of the Beleil Commissioner, thanked UNAMID for its support to local communities in Darfur, noting that the projects are important to local people.

Mr. El-Nadeeif commended the level of cooperation between the Government, police and UNAMID counterparts.

Omda Omer, who represented Marla local administrative leaders at the event, said that the police station and water pump development projects -- along with the rehabilitation of a basic school (for children aged between about six and 13 years of age) and a pharmacy -- will encourage voluntary return to the area.

Colonel Aboud Abukalaam, the Police Commissioner of Beleil, praised the cooperation between the state police and UNAMID.

Colonel Abukalaam said that the rehabilitated police facility would provide security services to a number of administrative units, including Deito, Sania-Fando, Labado and Ta’isha.
