On 30 August 2015, UNAMID’s Civil Affairs Section (CAS) officially handed over three newly constructed classrooms, offices and toilet facilities to the administration of the Northern Shangil Tobaya Basic School for Girls. The handover was attended by some 500 school girls, teachers, community leaders, the Government of Sudan military commander in the area, UNAMID staff of  North Darfur, the Director of Education and Shangil Tobaya Administrative Unit.

The construction activity was executed through the Mission’s Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) programme, in collaboration with local implementing partner, Al Nahda Organization for Peace and Development.

Speaking at the occasion, Rommel Dela Rosa, Civil Affairs Officer, UNAMID, said that the project was aimed at creating a conductive learning environment for the students, encouraging them to continue their education and reducing the dropout rate. “The completion of the project is expected to facilitate an increase in the overall enrolment of students in the school,” averred Mr. Dela Rosa.

On his part, Mr. Ismail Adam, Director of Education, Shangil Tobaya Administrative Unit, expressed his appreciation for UNAMID’s continued support to the educational institutions and overall development in the area. “We thank UNAMID for implementing various projects across fields such as education, health and security, particularly for internally displaced persons camps in Shangil Tobaya” said Mr. Adam.
