UNAMID DJSR encourages IDP Sheiks in Kalma IDP camp to find joint solution to security problems

Nyala, 2 December 2008 -- In a continuing effort by UNAMID to find a lasting solution to the security problems at Kalma IDP camp in South Darfur, the Mission’s Deputy Joint Special Representative (DJSR), Mr. Henry Anyidoho, accompanied by UNAMID senior officials, met with IDP leaders at Kalma camp to encourage them to begin discussions with the Government to look into different issues of concern and establish a mechanism to address these issues jointly.

“UNAMID at different levels is working to reestablish the communication between the Government and IDPs in order to bridge the gap between the two parties,” said the DJSR while addressing the IDP Sheikhs. In addition, he reassured that UNAMID would be present at the meetings to ensure security.

The DJSR explained that UNAMID is working with the Government and the humanitarian community to provide a secure environment so that the IDPs could return to their place of origin. “While these efforts are underway, the Mission will continue to assist the IDPs in every possible way in line with our mandate and the resources available,” he said. However, he also reminded that UNAMID would not replace the role of the Government and urged the Sheikhs to take on their responsibilities as the leaders of the camp.

The IDP leadership expressed their appreciation for the heightened security provided by UNAMID at the camp, and confirmed that the situation had improved particularly within the camp. “Our feelings of confidence have increased since UNAMID has provided 24/7 presence in the camp,” observed one of the IDP representatives. “Our women and children can sleep now outside the tents without any fear,” he said. However, they informed of increased incidents of insecurity outside the camp and requested UNAMID to increase the protection force around and outside the camp.

The IDP leadership noted the recommendations made by UNAMID to initiate dialogue with the Government and informed that feedback on their decision would be given following internal consultations on the matter.

Following the 25 August shooting incident at Kalma IDP camp, where 32 IDPs were killed and over 100 injured, UNAMID established a 24/7 presence around Kalma IDP camp, and developed a mission-wide integrated approach in pursuing its mandate to protect IDPs.
