UNAMID DDR launches youth projects in West Darfur

On 23 June, UNAMID’s Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) Section, in collaboration with the Islamic Relief Agency and the Ministry of Social Affairs, Youth and Sport, West Darfur, inaugurated three community-based labor-intensive projects (CLIPs).

The CLIPs include the construction of a 200 metre dam along the Babanousa Wadi, in the Al Safa area, which is aimed at reducing flooding as well as destruction of property. The other two projects involve the completion of a recreational facility for youth in El Geneina and a skills development project for young people targeted at creating opportunities for youngsters to contribute to community development, peace and stability.

These projects fall within the framework of UNAMID DDR’s concentrated efforts to support the local community in their quest for sustainable development.

In his remarks on the occasion, the UNAMID DDR Team Leader, Mr. Sisay, said that these projects mark another milestone in the implementation of youth-oriented CLIPs across Darfur. Additionally, he urged young Darfuris to take advantage of such opportunities and work toward becoming model citizens within their communities.
