UNAMID Continues to Support Prisons Systems in Darfur

On 1 March 2015, UNAMID launched a one-month train-the-trainers course on training methodology for Sudanese prison officers in El Fasher, North Darfur. The course, which attracted more than 30 individuals representing the five states of Darfur, is held as part of the Mission’s efforts to support the strengthening of the prisons systems across Darfur States.

The event, organized by UNAMID’s Prisons Advisory Unit (PAU) in collaboration with the State Prisons Administration in Darfur and the University of El Fasher, aimed at raising the standards of Prisons and enhancing the skills of prison officers throughout Darfur.

In his remarks at the opening session of the course, Brigadier General, Ahmed El Bashir, State Director of the North Darfur Prisons Administration expressed his appreciation of cooperation with all partners, particularly UNAMID. He pointed out that such training course will have a positive impact on the performance of prisons all over the region.

"This course is the fruit of joint efforts between UNAMID’s Prisons Advisory Unit and the Prisons’ Administration within the framework of the partnership between the two parties," he said, expressing his gratitude for UNAMID’s support in this respect.

On his part, UNAMID Head of Office in North Darfur, Mohammed El Amin Souef, reiterated UNAMID’s commitment to cooperating with all of its partners to achieve peace, stability and development amongst the Darfuri communities.

"We are looking forward to building a solid cooperation platform with our partners in various ways that serve Darfuri communities," he said.

UNAMID works closely with the Government of Sudan Police in many different ways to help enhance human rights and rule of law as well as to contribute to the reduction of violence across Darfur by conducting awareness raising workshops and capacity building training courses.
