UNAMID Constructs Youth Centres in West Darfur

On 24 November 2014, more than 80 students graduated from a six-month vocational training in carpentry, auto mechanics, generator-repair and welding. Additionally, UNAMID’s Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) Section also handed over two youth centres constructed as part of its Community-based Labour Intensive Projects (CLIPs),to local authorities.

The event was attended by community members including local government officials, civil society representatives and UNAMID personnel.

Addressing the event, UNAMID Military Commander, Brigadier-General Blaise Nikiema, noted the Mission’s contributions to economic recovery through various training initiatives designed to positively engage at-risk youth.

On his part, the Deputy Wali (Governor) of West Darfur, Mr. Abulgasim El-Amin Barak, expressed his appreciation for UNAMID’s continued support to the region.

Other speakers at the event, including the Minister of Social Affairs, Youth and Sport, Ms. Suad Salih Abdullah, commended the Mission for its efforts toward safeguarding Darfuri youth from resorting to criminality.

Such projects, implemented by UNAMID’s DDR Section, are aimed at reducing violence in Darfur, preventing crime and creating job opportunities for unemployed youth.
