UNAMID Commemorates International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers

On 28 May 2015, the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) commemorated the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers.

The event, held at UNAMID’s headquarters in El Fasher, North Darfur, was attended by the Mission’s Deputy Joint Special Representative (DJSR), Abdul Kamara, Force Commander, Lt. General Paul Mella, Police Commissioner, Hester Paneras, the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) representative, Mamoon Issa Abdelgader, representatives of civil society organizations, officials from the Government of Sudan as well as the Mission’s military, police and civilian staff.

The programme started with a military and police parade, lowering of the AU and UN flags and the observance of a minute of silence as well as a wreath-laying ceremony to honour those peacekeepers who had lost their lives in the line of duty.

It also included cultural performances by children from the Abu Shouk camp for the displaced and cultural performances by the Nepalese, Rwandese and Gambian contingents. A photo exhibition was also displayed.

DJSR Abdul Kamara conveyed the UN Secretary-General’s message on the occasion, noting that this year’s International Day of UN peacekeepers falls during the 70th anniversary of the UN, thereby offering a chance to honour the invaluable contribution of the Blue Helmets to the proud history of the organization.

UN peacekeeping has given life to the UN Charter’s aim “to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security.” Through years of struggle and sacrifice, the iconic Blue Helmet has earned its place as a symbol of hope to millions of people living in war-raged lands, he added.

On his part, Mr. Abdelgader expressed his appreciation to all peacekeepers serving in Darfur for their dedication and commitment to the cause for peace.

29 May is celebrated annually worldwide as International Day of UN Peacekeepers to pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in United Nations peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication, and courage and to honour the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.
