UNAMID Commemorates 21 Years of Genocide in Rwanda

On 7 April 2015, UNAMID’s Rwandan community organized an event commemorating 21 years of the genocide against the Tutsis in 1994 in El Fasher, North Darfur.

The programme, conducted under the theme ‘Walk to Remember,’ started with a march followed by prayers and speeches by the Rwandan Charge d’Affaires in Sudan, I. Shyaka Kajugiro, as well as the Guest of Honor, UNAMID’s Deputy Force Commander, Balla Keita. This was followed by the observance of a minute of silence as well as a candlelight vigil. Similar events took place in Kabkabiya, North Darfur, and Zalingei, Central Darfur.

On 23 December 2003, the General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/58/234, mandating April 7 as the International Day of Reflection on the Genocide in Rwanda annually in acknowledgement of those who lost their lives and to remind the world that similar crimes should not be repeated.
