UNAMID Chief taking every possible measure to ensure safe release of peacekeepers

15 April 2010 - The four UNAMID peacekeepers who were reported missing in Nyala, South Darfur, more than four days ago, remain unaccounted for.

Today, Joint Special Representative (JSR) Ibrahim Gambari announced that Crisis Management Teams have been established in Nyala, and at the Mission’s headquarters in El Fasher, North Darfur, to coordinate efforts to secure the peacekeepers’ safe return. UNAMID’s senior leadership is also in constant contact with the Government of the Sudan, which has set up a similar response team.

Meanwhile, immediate security measures have been taken by UNAMID and the Government of the Sudan to ensure the safety of the Mission’s staff in South Darfur, including regular checkpoints on roads, as well as convoys to escort staff members required to move after dark.

“Please rest assured that we are taking all possible measures to ensure that they return safely and speedily,” said the JSR.
