UNAMID Celebrates UN Day

On 26 October 2015, UNAMID, in collaboration with the United Nations Country Team (UNCT), celebrated UN Day which, this year, marks the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. The event took place at the Al Zubeir Stadium, El Fasher, North Darfur, under the theme “Strong UN. Better World,” and included a photo exhibition, cultural and musical performances by local artistes, a military parade and a quiz related to the UN and UNAMID’s mandate.

In addition to this, Information, Educational and Communication (IEC) materials related to UN activities, UNAMID’s mandate, HIV/AIDS and the Darfur Internal Dialogue and Consultations (DIDC) process were distributed among the general public.

The local population, including women’s groups and youth representatives from El Fasher town and surrounding camps for the displaced attended the occasion, along with government officials, UNAMID staff and members of the UNCT.

Addressing the gathering, UNAMID’s Force Commander Lt.-General Paul Mella read out the UN Secretary General’s message on the day, where Mr. Ban stated that no single country or organization can address today’s challenges alone. “Our peacekeepers are on the frontlines of conflict; our mediators bring warriors to the peace table; our relief workers brave treacherous environments to deliver life-saving assistance,” said the Secretary-General.

Also speaking on the occasion, the Darfur Regional Authority representative, Ibrahim Adam called upon UNAMID and the UNCT to expand the scope of the assistance they provide to the people of Darfur. Additionally, he highlighted the DRA’s efforts to foster peace and development in the region through the implementation of more than 300 development projects.

On his part, Musa Mustafa, Minister of Youth and Sport, North Darfur State Government, expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by UNAMID and the UNCT in Darfur. He called upon the international community to positively influence non-signatory armed movements to join the National Dialogue to bring about lasting peace in this conflict-torn region.
