UNAMID assesses humanitarian conditions of newly displaced persons

27 January 2010 - Yesterday, UNAMID’s Human Rights Division, along with OCHA, WFP and IOM, concluded a two-day assessment mission to Dar El Salaam and Shangil Tobaya, North Darfur, to meet with recently displaced IDPs and determine their immediate humanitarian needs.

IDPs in both regions were found to be in desperate need of food and water. Those in Dar El Salam, who are out of the reach of many humanitarian organisations, face a bigger challenge in terms of water as compared to those in Shangil Tobaya.

Due to low levels of rainfall last year, state authorities and the humanitarian community expect significant food shortages in IDP camps in 2010, increasing the possibility of further conflict.

On 5 December, two UNAMID peacekeepers were killed in Shangil Tobaya, as they distributed water to IDPs.
